Open Source Overview
What is it? Why use it? How to evaluate it?
At the basic level an open source product means that the underlying software is available for public viewing and modification. The software can be as small in scope as a device driver for printer, to as large as enterprise wide telephony/VOIP services.
In the following pages we will see more clearly what open source software is. Why we would consider choosing it over closed source alternatives. Finally, what analysis a business or a consultant requires to choose such products. Open source is a growing model in the Information Technology space. There are many different viewpoints, advocates, and critics on this topic. Check out the LINKS section, under advocacy for further reading.
